TEF Canada vs TCF Canada for Express Entry: Which French Test Should You Take?

TEF Canada and TCF Canada are both accepted for Express Entry. How their speaking tests differ, how results are valid, and how to choose between them.

By Cadentia Team ·

Both TEF Canada and TCF Canada are approved by IRCC for Express Entry. Neither is wrong for immigration, so you choose on practical grounds: what your centre offers, the dates available, and which speaking format you can rehearse with confidence. There is no official ranking of difficulty.

IRCC lists the two approved French tests, TEF Canada (Test d'évaluation de français) and TCF Canada (Test de connaissance du français), on its language test page. Results must be less than 2 years old when you complete your profile and submit your application.

What are the real differences for a speaker?

  • One long push vs three short tasks. TEF puts ten minutes of persuasion at the end, against an examiner who disagrees on purpose. TCF Task 3 is shorter and asks for your opinion on a question rather than an argument with a friend.
  • Preparation. TCF Task 2 gives 2 minutes to plan your questions. TEF Section A, per the examiner's booklet we checked, sets no timed preparation.
  • Warm-up. TCF Task 1 is a personal interview. TEF goes straight into the phone role-play.
  • Register. TEF switches from formal (vous) to friendly (tu) between sections.

How should you choose?

  1. Check your centre. Not every city runs both. Use each owner's centre finder (see exam centres and how to book).
  2. Check dates against your deadlines. Results are valid for under two years and sessions can fill up.
  3. Try the formats. Do a timed TEF Section A task and a TCF Task 3 answer. One will feel more natural, and that is a better guide than a forum opinion.
  4. Ask your immigration adviser if you have one; the right choice can also depend on your pathway.

Whichever you choose, the speaking score only moves with practice at speaking. See TEF prep: tutors, classes or self-practice.

Where Cadentia fits

Cadentia's free timed Section A call rehearses the TEF Canada speaking format with an AI examiner and shows afterwards which criteria you hit and missed. Dedicated TCF tasks are not available yet; Section A trains the same skill as TCF Task 2 (asking for information in a role-play). It gives no score, is not an official resource, and Cadentia is not affiliated with IRCC, CCI Paris Île-de-France or France Éducation international.

Frequently asked questions

Is TEF Canada or TCF Canada better for Express Entry?

Neither is better for Express Entry: IRCC approves both. The practical differences are the format of each test, which sessions your nearest centre runs, and which format you feel more ready for.

Is the TEF or the TCF speaking test easier?

There is no official answer, and we would not trust anyone who claims one. TEF speaking has a long persuasion section (10 minutes). TCF has three shorter tasks including a 2-minute interview. People find different parts hard.

How long are TEF and TCF results valid for Express Entry?

IRCC requires results to be less than 2 years old when you complete your Express Entry profile and submit your application.

Do both tests use NCLC levels?

Yes. IRCC publishes equivalency tables from each test's results to NCLC levels for speaking, listening, reading and writing.

Can I take both tests?

Nothing in the sources we checked forbids it, but check IRCC's current rules and the test owners' policies before booking a second test.

Can I rehearse the speaking format for free?

Cadentia's free timed Section A call at /tef rehearses the TEF Canada speaking format with an AI examiner. TCF-specific tasks are not available yet.
