TCF Canada Expression Orale: Tasks 1, 2 and 3 Explained
The TCF Canada speaking test is 12 minutes with three tasks: a directed interview, an interaction exercise with 2 minutes of preparation, and a point-of-view task. Timings and what each asks.
The TCF Canada speaking test (expression orale) is an individual, face-to-face test of 12 minutes in total, with three tasks, including 2 minutes of preparation before the second one. Here is what each task asks, how it is scored for immigration, and how to rehearse it.
Details below come from France Éducation international (FEI), the test's owner. Its site blocked automated access when we checked, so the timings are from its indexed page text: confirm them on the TCF Canada page before you plan your practice. For the TEF equivalent, see the TEF Canada speaking format.
What are the three tasks?
| Task | Name | Time | Preparation | What it asks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Entretien dirigé (directed interview) | 2 minutes | None | Talk with someone you do not know: yourself, your life, your plans |
| 2 | Exercice en interaction | 5 min 30 (including 2 min prep) | 2 minutes | Obtain information in an everyday situation |
| 3 | Expression d'un point de vue | 4 min 30 | None | Speak spontaneously, continuously and convincingly about a question |
The total is 12 minutes: 2 + 5:30 + 4:30.
What should you do in Task 1?
It is an interview, so it is a warm-up with real marking. Answer in complete sentences, not single words, and add a reason or an example each time. Typical subjects are your work or studies, where you live, a normal day and why you are moving to Canada. Prepare short answers for those out loud, in the past, present and future, because the interview moves between them.
What should you do in Task 2?
You get a situation and need to find out what you need: renting a room, enrolling in a course, booking something. You have 2 minutes of preparation first. Use it to list what you want to know (price, schedule, conditions, how to enrol) and to choose your register (vous with a stranger). Then ask clearly, react to the answers and ask follow-ups.
What should you do in Task 3?
You are asked for your point of view on a question and need to speak for about four and a half minutes with no preparation. The skill is structure, not originality: state your opinion, give two or three reasons, give an example for each, acknowledge another view, and conclude. Connectors such as d'abord, en outre, cependant and en conclusion keep you moving when your mind goes blank.
How is TCF Canada speaking converted to NCLC?
For Express Entry, IRCC publishes the conversion. The speaking score is out of 20:
| Speaking score | NCLC level |
|---|---|
| 4-5 | 4 |
| 6 | 5 |
| 7-9 | 6 |
| 10-11 | 7 |
| 12-13 | 8 |
| 14-15 | 9 |
| 16-20 | 10 |

How do you rehearse these tasks?
Do them aloud against a clock. Silent reading of model answers builds recognition, not speech. A simple loop is: do one task with the timer on, record yourself, listen back for hesitations and repeated errors, then do the same task again. For topic ideas by task, see TEF and TCF speaking topics and sample questions.
Where Cadentia fits
Cadentia's free timed practice is built around the TEF Canada format, not the TCF's. Its Section A call (a timed role-play to get information) trains the same skill as TCF Task 2, and you see afterwards which criteria you hit and missed with your own words quoted. TCF-specific tasks are not available yet. It gives no score or NCLC estimate, is not an official resource, and Cadentia is not affiliated with France Éducation international.
