How to Get NCLC 7 in French Speaking for Express Entry (and What It Is Worth)
What NCLC 7 means, how NCLC and CLB map to Express Entry CRS points, why NCLC 7 in all four abilities matters, and how to prepare for the speaking score.
NCLC 7 is the French language level that Express Entry treats as a threshold. It is the minimum for IRCC's French-language proficiency category, and NCLC 7 or higher in all four abilities earns 25 or 50 extra CRS points. Speaking is one of the four, and it is the one candidates most often find hardest to prepare.
Everything on immigration below comes from IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada). Rules and draws change, so check canada.ca before you decide anything. This is not legal or immigration advice.
What are NCLC and CLB?
NCLC (Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens) is the Canadian benchmark scale for French. CLB (Canadian Language Benchmarks) is the English one. The level numbers are the same, so NCLC 7 sits at the same level as CLB 7. TEF Canada and TCF Canada are the two French tests IRCC approves for Express Entry, and their results must be less than 2 years old when you submit your profile and application.
What is NCLC 7 worth in CRS points?
IRCC's Comprehensive Ranking System awards points per ability (reading, writing, listening, speaking) for your first official language. These are the points for one ability such as speaking:
| CLB / NCLC level | With a spouse | Without a spouse |
|---|---|---|
| 4 or 5 | 6 | 6 |
| 6 | 8 | 9 |
| 7 | 16 | 17 |
| 8 | 22 | 23 |
| 9 | 29 | 31 |
| 10 or more | 32 | 34 |
Source: IRCC, CRS criteria grid. The jump from level 6 to level 7 is the largest single step in the table: 8 or 9 points to 16 or 17, for one ability.
If French is your stronger language, it is your first official language for this part of the grid, and your English can add second-language points on top. The grid has more factors than we cover here.
What are the French bonus points?
| Your results | Additional CRS points |
|---|---|
| NCLC 7 or higher in all four French abilities, English CLB 4 or lower (or no English test) | 25 |
| NCLC 7 or higher in all four French abilities, English CLB 5 or higher in all four abilities | 50 |
Source: same IRCC grid. "All four" is the catch: a speaking score at NCLC 6 with the other three at 8 does not qualify.
IRCC also runs a French-language proficiency category for Express Entry rounds of invitations, with a minimum of 7 in all four abilities, per its category-based selection page. Which categories are used, and their cut-offs, change between rounds, so we do not quote any here. The Federal Skilled Worker program separately requires CLB 7 in all four abilities, in English or French, per its eligibility page.
What speaking score is NCLC 7?
| Test | Speaking result for NCLC 7 | Source |
|---|---|---|
| TCF Canada | 10 or 11 (out of 20) | IRCC equivalency table |
| TEF Canada | See below |
TEF Canada needs a warning. Two official tables exist. CCI Paris Île-de-France's score correspondence table lists 456 to 493 (out of 699) for oral expression for exams from 11 December 2023. IRCC's equivalency page lists a different range, 310 to 348, and says results marked "Score / 699" should not be entered in your profile because they are not compatible with its system. We cannot reconcile that for you. Go by the NCLC level shown on your results and IRCC's current instructions, and ask your test centre if unsure.
How do you get ready for the speaking score?
The tests do not publish a checklist for NCLC 7, so the safest preparation is to be comfortable with every task in the format. In both tests that means:
- Know the tasks cold (TEF format, TCF tasks) so the format never surprises you.
- Do timed tasks out loud, the way they will happen, repeatedly. The skill is producing French under a clock.
- Find your repeated errors (gender, agreement, prepositions, tense choice) and fix those few, not everything.
- Practise unplanned moments: a vague answer, an objection, a topic you have no opinion on.
- Rehearse the last week: a full mock a few days before, then rest.
Speaking is the ability you improve by speaking. See TEF prep: tutors, classes or self-practice.
Where Cadentia fits
Cadentia's free timed Section A call lets you rehearse the TEF Canada speaking format with an AI examiner and see which criteria you hit and missed. It does not score you, estimate an NCLC level or promise points. It is practice, not an official resource, and Cadentia is not affiliated with IRCC, CCI Paris Île-de-France or France Éducation international.

Frequently asked questions
What is NCLC 7?
NCLC (Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens) is the Canadian framework for French language ability, the counterpart of the CLB for English. Level 7 is an intermediate level that IRCC uses as a threshold for several Express Entry rules.
Why does NCLC 7 matter for Express Entry?
IRCC's French-language proficiency category requires a minimum of 7 in all four abilities, and the CRS awards extra points for NCLC 7 or higher in all four: 25 points if your English is CLB 4 or lower, 50 if it is CLB 5 or higher in all four abilities. The Federal Skilled Worker program also requires CLB 7 in each ability, in English or French.
Is NCLC the same as CLB?
The level numbers line up: NCLC 7 corresponds to CLB 7. IRCC uses NCLC for French results and CLB for English results.
What score do I need in TCF Canada speaking for NCLC 7?
On IRCC's table, a TCF Canada speaking score of 10 or 11 out of 20 is NCLC 7.
What score do I need in TEF Canada speaking for NCLC 7?
It depends on which table applies. CCI Paris Île-de-France lists 456 to 493 (out of 699) for exams from 11 December 2023. IRCC's published table lists 310 to 348 and tells applicants not to enter results marked out of 699. Use the NCLC level on your results and follow IRCC's current guidance.
Can speaking practice guarantee NCLC 7?
No. Nobody can promise a score. Timed practice helps you become familiar with the tasks and find your repeated mistakes.
