Your task: call the owner and ask about ten questions. There is a catch in this one.
Reading and listening pass. Speaking is where the score goes.
Section A feels like acting
You phone a stranger about an ad you do not care about and have to come up with about ten questions while a clock runs.
Words you know go missing
Under time pressure you translate in your head. One missing word becomes a long pause, and the pause costs you the next question.
The score comes back with no reason
A number, weeks later, that says nothing about what to fix. Each retake costs hundreds of dollars.
Section A is partly a format. A format can be practised.
The examiner marks how you run the call, not only your French. Four things, every time:
- Ask about ten questionsPrice, dates, conditions: what the ad leaves out. Use vous.
- React to each answerA short reaction (“Ah, je vois”), then your next question.
- Handle the catchSomething will not be as the ad says. Ask how it works.
- End the call yourselfNobody ends it for you: “Merci, au revoir.”
Each call ends in flashcards, and the next call starts from them
Call about the ad, five minutes on the clock
Cadi plays the advertiser the way the examiner's booklet describes: partial answers, a catch in the ad, and no corrections during the call.
Stuck on a word? Say it in English and keep going
The examiner carries on in French without comment. You keep talking instead of freezing, and the call records exactly which French you were missing.
Oui, l'appartement est toujours disponible.
Est-ce que le… heating… est inclus dans le loyer ?
Non, le chauffage n'est pas inclus.
Then the French you were missing, and the criteria with your words
Each criterion is marked hit, partly or missed, quoting what you actually said, with one thing to try next time.
- Relevant questions
Est-ce que le chauffage est inclus ?
- Quality of the exchange
D’accord, et pour la visite ?
React to each answer before the next question (“Ah, je vois…”). - Initiative and the unexpectedWhen the answer is vague (“ça dépend”), ask a precise follow-up: “Ça dépend de quoi, exactement ?”
Practice feedback against the published TEF criteria. It is not a score and does not predict your NCLC level.
Every mistake becomes a flashcard in your deck
Save your results with a free account and they go into Review. A few minutes a day, out loud, spaced out until the exam. Four cards from that Rosemont call:
- Said in English
heatingle chauffage - Register
je veux savoir si…je voudrais savoir si… - Preposition
au Rosemontà Rosemont - Word order
combien ça coûte le stationnementcombien coûte le stationnement
- Said in English
Next call, a new situation, on a plan to your exam date
Section A calls and Section B “convince a friend” debates, more of the one you miss most, and a full mock three days before.
