Duolingo vs Babbel vs Busuu vs Pimsleur: Which Gets You Speaking?

Duolingo, Babbel, Busuu and Pimsleur compared on what they do for speaking, plus what to use after you finish a Duolingo course.

By Cadentia Team ·

None of these four apps will make you conversational on its own, but they get you closer in different ways. Pimsleur is the most speaking-centred, Busuu adds feedback from native speakers, Babbel is the most dialogue-and-grammar structured, and Duolingo is the best at keeping you coming back. If you have already finished a course and still freeze when you talk, the missing piece is usually speaking practice with correction, not another course.

Duolingo vs Babbel: which is better?

Duolingo is built for consistency. Short lessons, streaks and a huge catalogue of languages keep millions of people practising daily, and that habit is worth something. The standard course leans on tapping, matching and translating, which builds recognition more than speech. The paid Max tier adds Video Call, where you talk with the character Lily, and Roleplay, where you practise scenarios and get feedback.

Babbel is known for lessons built around practical, real-life dialogues. It has introduced Babbel Speak, an AI conversation feature that Babbel says launched first for English, Spanish, French, Italian and German learners. If you want clearer structure than Duolingo and a gentler path into speaking, Babbel is a sound choice. Both are mainly courses, so neither is the place you will spend an hour talking freely.

Duolingo vs Busuu: does community feedback matter?

Busuu's distinctive idea is that you can write or record an answer and get corrections from native speakers in its community. It also follows CEFR levels from A1 to C1, which helps if you want to measure where you are against a recognised scale. Its Premium Plus plan adds AI Conversations and pronunciation feedback, and its Study Plan lets you set a goal and weekly schedule.

Compared with Duolingo, Busuu is more explicit about levels and more directed at speaking confidence. Compared with a live conversation, the feedback is still asynchronous for the community part, so you are not under the real-time pressure that conversation puts you under.

Duolingo vs Pimsleur: what is the difference?

Pimsleur is audio-first. A lesson runs about 30 minutes: you hear a short conversation, it is broken into pieces, and you are asked to say each piece before you hear it. Material comes back at widening intervals. The app also has a Voice Coach and reading lessons, and the company covers around 50 languages.

For a beginner who wants to speak from the first day, with no screen and no typing, that is a very direct design. The trade-off is that you follow its script. It does not know what happened in your week, and you are repeating prepared phrases rather than building your own sentences from scratch. Duolingo offers more variety and visual practice; Pimsleur offers more speaking per minute.

What should you use after you finish Duolingo?

Finishing a course feels like a finish line, but what you have mostly built is recognition: you can read it, you can follow it slowly, and you can pick the right answer from a list. Speaking asks for something different, which is retrieving words and building a sentence in real time with nobody giving you options. That is why people say they finished Duolingo Spanish or French and still cannot talk. We went through the reasons in finished Duolingo but still can't speak.

What helps is volume of speaking with correction:

  1. Talk every day, even for ten minutes. Frequency beats length.
  2. Get corrected on what you actually said. Generic grammar drills are not the same as fixing your own habits.
  3. Meet your mistakes again. A fix you see once is usually forgotten; one that returns a few days later sticks.
  4. Keep some input going. Reading, podcasts and your course vocabulary still matter.

You can do this with a tutor, a language-exchange partner, a voice assistant you coach to correct you, or a speaking app. Our guide to becoming conversational by speaking lays out a routine.

Where does Cadentia fit?

Cadentia is an AI speaking-practice app for the stage after the course. You speak out loud in real-time voice conversation in Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian or English. It corrects what you said, keeps each mistake, and brings it back in review and in later conversations. There is a free plan, and a free speaking check that needs no account.

Who should not use Cadentia? If you are starting from zero and need lessons that teach you the first thousand words, use one of the four apps above first. Cadentia assumes you already understand a fair amount. It is also not a substitute for a human teacher.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better, Duolingo or Babbel?

Babbel is known for lessons built around practical dialogues. Duolingo's strength is the daily habit and its range of languages. Neither is mainly a speaking tool, though both have added AI speaking features, so the better one is the one you will keep opening.

Is Busuu better than Duolingo for speaking?

Busuu has a distinctive feature: learners can get feedback from native speakers in its community, and its Premium Plus tier adds AI conversations and pronunciation feedback. That is more speaking-directed than the standard Duolingo experience, but Duolingo's Max tier also adds Video Call and Roleplay.

Is Pimsleur better than Duolingo?

For speaking from zero, many learners find Pimsleur more direct, because every lesson is audio and you answer out loud. Duolingo covers reading, writing and a bigger range of languages in a game format. They suit different goals and different moods.

What should I do after finishing Duolingo Spanish or French?

Start speaking every day and getting corrected, because recognition is the skill the app trained and production is the one it did not. A speaking tool, a tutor, or a conversation partner will do. Keep your vocabulary reviewing going alongside it.

Can I learn to speak from an app alone?

You can build a lot of the base, but most people also need real or realistic conversation: a tutor, an exchange partner, or an AI speaking tool. No app can promise a level, and we would be wary of any that does.

Who should not use Cadentia?

True beginners who need a curriculum, and anyone who wants a structured course to follow. Cadentia is for people who already understand a fair amount and want more speaking practice. It supports Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian and English.
